my mum told me once that you shouldn't use the word 'pregnant' when talking about animals that lay eggs. is this true and what is a better word i can use, if i see for example a frog that is heavy with spawn or a woodlouse carrying its eggs under its plates?

I use 'pregnant'. 'Gravid' is probably a better term, but my rule of thumb is "use a word that the person you're talking to understands".

If an animal is carrying eggs, it is said to be "gravid".
