It's probably the module inside the HEI Distributor, you have to pull the cap and rotor to change it, there will be 2 plugs one on each end of it and 2 small screws 3/16 If I remember right, I'd get a new one from the wrecker first to try it, and put a little haet sink grease on the bottom of it, you can get it at a computer builder. I replaced a few of these on my 78 truck and on other vehicles as well, it should only take a few minutes to do it. Good luck

Does it not crank or does it crank but not fire? Two different problems. Which one? You have to be specific as this is hard enough without looking at the car. If it doesn't crank, test battery output, cables and connections to battery, starter, and ground. If all the stuff here is good, use a test light at the starter to see if you have voltage inputs when you attempt to crank. If it's the other problem, you have to check for spark output at all plug wire ends and check to see if there is fuel delivery. If you have no spark, check the tach pulses with a test light connected to the tach terminal on the dist., it should pulse really quickly when it is cranking. If it doesn't you will have either a pick-up coil, module, or coil problem. If you have no fuel, plugged fuel filter, faulty fuel pump, blockage from tank to pump, or an internal carb problem. I am assuming the motor is okay here. Good luck.
