A brass grill brush works well for the grates. I wrap my burners in plastic (or lift them out) and use EZ Off oven cleaner on the inside. Then rinse well with a garden hose. I don't do this often but have had some clinging grease that dripped onto the food.

I agree with previous poster, easy off and spray off what the brass brush and such won't clean off.
But if you want to know the best method- it's prevention! I wrap foil over the top of my grill grates! It cooks the same, and clean up is a cinch! Once the grill is cooled, remove the foil and discard!
