Just cut the stems at an angle so they absorb more water. I've heard about aspirin working and I've heard about people using sugar. From what I recall from a science project one of my students did a number of years back I don't think aspirin or sugar really makes a difference as far as making them last longer.
My suggestion is that you use distilled water or water that hasn't gone through a water softener at least. Water softeners add salt to the water. Also it's a good idea to change the water every couple of days due to bacteria building up. Bleach would help kill the bacteria but it would also help kill the flower. It also would probably help if you re-trimmed the ends of the stems about every 3 days or so. After so long the end of the stem can get like a film over it then it doesn't want to absorb water as well.
There is actually flower preservative you can add to the water. It tends to work the best.

Cut the stems at an angle so the suck up more water and add a TINY bit of sugar to the water. Maybe 1 teaspoon per half gallon of water.

when you first get them stick an aspirin in the water, and swirl. I don't know how, but it makes them last twice as long.
When the main arrangement is going, trim the buds that still look okay and rearrange in a smaller vase. It looks great, and they last long with fresh water. Change the water twice a week.

cut the stem on an angle and add 7up to the water. when they seem to wilt over time just cut them again and add fresh water, and a little more 7up. the amount of 7up depends on the size of the vase, about a quarter of a cup for a large vase. it works i had a friend who owned a flower shop.

I trim the stems with a knife...not scissors and add a few drops of bleach. Make sure there are no leaves in the water.
