Does your portable hard drive require an additional power cable? If so, simply plugging in the usb cable won't work.

HDDs, portable or no, have an insatiable thirst for electricity, and they can not pull enough through a USB port, which is why they have power cords.

Flash drives don't need large amounts of power, so has no problem with being simply plugged into the USB socket.

if they are both usb and both work at home then they should both work at school. System policy restrictions can't tell the difference between a flash and a hard drive.

Portable hard drive need stronger power, and your pc couldnt support much power.

With a prtable hard drive you can boot from it and go around there security with a flash drive it can'tt hold an OS.
