It is estimated that the human population will reach 9-12 billion people by 2050. Can the planet support this? Even if it could why would we want 12 billion people living here? Consider any problem there is on the planet now and double the amount of people. What can we do to stop our population growth? 3 people are added to the each every second. Imagine the 3 people added in line infront of you at the grocery store.

Earths natural way of curtailing human population is through famine, drought, natural disaster, disease, plague, wars, crime, etc.

Well, so far we've shown we are incapable of supporting 7 billion, so I think it is safe to say that 12 billion is too many. The answer to the problem is simple... birth control and China-like child limitations. Enforcing it, especially in third world countries where most of the population explosion is occurring... that is an entirely different story. May well be virtually impossible. Where is a nice world-wide plague when you really need it!?

p.s. Based on some of the answers you've received, it appears a lot of people are really ignorant about the population problem. Yes, people die, but that is not the point. The rate at which people are being born is far out growing the rate at which people are dying. The world's population has increased by over a billion in just the past 20 years. 100 years ago, the world only had 3 billion people. Now it has 7 billion. People died then, too, didn't they? Hmm...

I would guess that 12 billion people could easily be sustainable, but we won't be able to consume resources like westerners do currently. It will require a certain amount of ingenuity as well as sacrifice.

Of course we can. The earth was created to support life. But with the way things are going, abortions, terrorists. etc. it seems to me that some are doing their best to reduce the population.

We can live on the Moon or Mars :) I'd do it.
Humans bypass the natural selection thing by keeping every person possible alive.
I don't know what we can do about it
