I have Windows Vista Business. I am located in UK but my family(siblings) is located in Asia. As they are novice in computer, I want to connect their machine remotely and set it up for proper protections against Adware, Spyware and like that. Even in that case i want to transfer some music files from my machine to theirs. How do i do that? They have Windows XP machines. I have tried to use Remote Desktop but it is asking DNS name and more. What should I provide to successfully connect their machine and transfer files? Any good software help to do this? Is it free?

Thanks.

I am going to assume a few things:

1. In the UK you have a dynamic IP Internet feed through a modem that provides an ethernet feed to a router.
2. In Asia, they have a dynamic IP Internet feed through a modem that provides an ethernet feed to a router as well.
3. You can replace routers without a problem and you can get static IP at both locations.

Here is what you do

1. Get static IP addresses at both locations. You will need to change the WAN settings on the routers to accomodate the static IP when the change is made or you will not have Internet. This needs to be done at both locations. You have to set the WAN settings to static IP and enter the static IP, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS the ISP provides.
2. Determine if you can set up IPSec VPN to reside on the routers you now have. I doubt you can because you probably have household routers - and you probably need a replacement. I suggest Adtran 2050 Enhanced routers, Adtran Part 1202362L2 with NetVanta 2050/2054 Enhanced Feature Pack Upgrade, part 1950362L2.
3. For UK, configure router 1 with the UK static ip info and make the LAN subnet 192.168.1.0/24 (set router ip at 192.168.1.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.1.1). Limit DHCP to 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.250.
4. For Asia, configure router 2 with the Asia static ip info and make the LaN subnet 192.168.2.0/24 (set router ip at 192.168.2.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.2.1). Limit DHCP to 192.168.2.100 - 192.168.2.250. Make sure you set the Asia router up so you can acces it remotely by http and telnet also.
5. Install the routers at both locations; be sure to reboot modems and pcs when they are installed. Make sure that you can access internet at both locations.
6. Configure an IPSec VPN to link the two locations. This is why you will need static IP and why you need to access Asia router remotely from UK.
7. After VPN is up, you can activate remote desk top on a UK pc and access an Asia pc by typing in the LAN IP of the Asia pc. If you don't know the LAN IP of the Asia pc, you can get it from the router config of the Asia pc which you can access remotely.
