American citizens made it plain to the senate that we want a secure border. Democrats and republicans should come together on this. In the interest of national security, the proper treatment of immigrants and the well being of the economy.

In a representative government, sometimes, Congressman must defy the unruly crowd, even if the unruly crowd is in the majority on an issue. It is precisely why we are not a "pure" democracy.

We have all the laws we need in place. The democrats in the past have cut funding and the repubs did not restore funding as needed today to the Border Patrol.

The Fed needs to tell all states, starting tomorrow all funding is stopped until you can prove you are making arrests and sending people to INS for deportation.

All employers are given a 48 hour notice, break this law and we will close your business for 90 days for investigation and fines.

It is simple, cough up the money. Heck we have all the money in the world to support the latest pork or the latest feel good socialist program but we cannot somehow fund closing the border? Give me a break.

The House might pass The Secure Borders First Act, if enough Americans prod them to act, but this Senate will never pass such a bill. The "Lords" of the Senate do not listen to the desires of lowly American citizens, they are only concerned with the lobbyists who provide them the funding that they need to be re-elected.

We need to elect a president and a Congress in 2008 that will take Homeland security very seriously which means don't vote for Dems in 2008. The Dems are the PC party which caters to minority groups, is for open borders, and wants to allow all illegal aliens in our country to be legalized. There are a few good Dem US Reps, but they usually do what Pelosi and Reid tell them to do.

To Shelly: We do not need to deport all the illegals in our country! If we follow a policy of Attrition through enforcement.
http://www.numbersusa.com/interests/attrition.html they will leave themselves because they cannot find employment. Your "logic" is flawed because of your ignorance on this issue.

They need to have a SEPARATE bill that deals JUST with border security, not one massive bill included with immigration reform.

The highest consensus Americans have is about securing the border; Congress needs to get together and pass a border security bill first and foremost, THEN try to deal with immigration reform.

That was just in the current legislation that was voted down. We need to work within the world we actually live in, not the one we wish existed -- meaning, there's not way we can go around deporting millions of people. They either stay as illegal, or we make them citizens. Now, making them citizens, but including a fine, etc., was better than nothing.

So, yes, it would've been nice be have actually had some legislation in place to start stopping the problem, rather than voting to continue to do nothing about it. Way to go - you didn't get EXACTLY what you wanted, so now nothing will be done. Bravo!

Zero.

Chances of a rational compromise that includes enforcement and increased legal immigration instead of amnesty: Zero.

Chances of a barely-rational compromise that puts enforcement first and grants Amnesty selectively and conditionally upon successful enforcement only: Zero.

Chances of exisiting immigration laws actually being enforced with just the laws on the books: Zero.

25%

I like to think of politics like genetics.

Half of the Conservatives want it ---> 1/2
Half of the Liberals want it ---> 1/2

* note: based on the nation, not just DC.

Therefore if half of each wants it then

1/2*1/2 = 1/4 = 25% chance of actually getting it.
