The short answer is — details were omitted in the films, read the books for the whole story.
In brief, what you're asking about is this (and this may also help to serve as an example of how things get changed for film)...
The battle between Gandalf (the Grey) and the Balrog that is witnessed by the rest of the Fellowship is found here:
"The Lord of the Rings — Part One — The Fellowship of the Ring — Book Two — Chapter 5 — "The Bridge of Khazad-dûm"
Gandalf (the White) later recounts the battle to Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas here:
"The Lord of the Rings — Part Two — The Two Towers — Book Three — Chapter 5 — "The White Rider"
The fight scene that opens the second film takes only about one and one-third pages in the book, by the way.
• Gandalf and the Balrog (a creature from the elder days, when Sauron was a lieutenant of the *really* big bad guy) start the fight on Durin's Bridge.
• Both fall into the abyss formerly spanned by the bridge when Gandalf breaks it.
• The Balrog attempts to flee, eventually leading Gandalf to the Endless Stair, by ways so old that even Sauron wouldn't know of them. (The Endless Stair was made by dwarves.)
• Gandalf and the Balrog fight all the way up the Endless stair, which ran from the roots of the mountain to its highest peak.
• On that peak is Durin's Tower, carved long long ago by dwarves from the mountain itself.
Your best bet, though, would be to read the novels, a lot of material was left out, and a fair bit jumbled in order to make the films work (the expansion of the role played by Arwen Evenstar in the films, anyone?).

They fell to the bottom of Khazad-Dum. They continued fighting the whole way down. They fell into water, and then the Balrog found the endless stair and climbed it. Gandalf followed him. They followed the stair to the top of the tower, still fighting and that's how they got there. I forget the name of the tower....I just read it a couple of days ago too....damn it. anyway, that's how it happened.

Gandalf did not fight the 'firing monster' (it`s called the Balrog) on a tower.
He fought that thing on a bridge within the mines of Moria.
The fighting on the tower was perhaps Sarumans tower.
The other tower was Saurons tower, with the fiery eye.
And yes, read the book, so much more than the movie.

Gandalf and the Balrog (that firing monster) a demon from ancient past are fighting in the dephts of Moria, where Gandalf defeats that demon.
I think you are confused the Balrog with the Nazgul, the flying beasts of Sauron.
Please read the book, it is far better than the movie.

chris_oshell_88 they dodn't fight on kilimongor, don't say such rubbish, their last fight which lasted two days and two nights was on the top of zirakzigil. It was told, in the two towers i say, that they didn't die, but balrog climbed on top of the mountain (zirakzigil), gandalf followed him for eight days, and they fought there.Gandalf was sent back than, and you know the rest of the story.
That's the story about that.
