My gelding is turning 23yrs old and I was thinking of having a b-day party for him, the people coming are primarily children. I know it sounds weird, but I am a stay at home mom and have some extra time on my hands to plan something like this. He is a very good natured horse so I am not worried about him around the kids. What do you think? Do you have any ideas of activities?

Let me tell you, My children love the idea, and I do volenteer at the nursing home, I take my service dog there once a week. I know it is kind of crazy, but it is also for the kids, he is also their horse.

I was thinking the kids could bob for apples, in a clean water tank of course.

Congrats! There are some recipes for horse carrot cake and other treats for your guy on www.leadmare.com/community/recipes.html

I wouldn't worry about what other people think about a birthday party for your guy. After all the non-horse people just don't understand what we have with our horses and animals.

And this is really too bad for them that they will remain the way they are. I can't even begin to tell you the countless lessons my horses and animals have taught me. Tolerance, patience, kindness, and a work ethic just to name a few.

Have carrots and cut up apples (not too many of these though) watermelon (horses love watermelon) carrot cake, etc....and show the kids/people on how not to feed their fingers to your gelding. I would also educated the kids/people on how not to get stepped on by the horse.

Get a friend who is horse knowledgable to help you at the party. Because it will be really difficult to keep an eye on the kid/horse situation at ALL times. And be sure and fly spray your guy so he won't be stoming and biting at flies and other bugs.

Does your horse like baths? Summer fun bathing the horse. The only rules are you can't squirt things in the face and don't get any shampoo or conditioners in his eyes. You can have the kids decorate your guy for a costume class or if you had the room and there was other older ponies who could care less about what is being done to them have horse decorating classes and judging with ribbons going to all teams.

The possibilities are endless. Have fun. Put someone in charge of pictures and movies.

What a sweet idea! You sound like a terrific horse and kid momma. Your kids are lucky to have a mom who thinks outside the box. Congrats on the longevity of your horse.

You could have stick horse races, bob for apples, guessing games about your horse (girth size, tail length). Give rides on him. Maybe everybody helps give him a bath so he's nice and clean and the kids can cool off in the water.

Make him some nice treats like horse cookies or muffins. Maybe give him a slice of watermelon he can enjoy with the kids.

Have a terrific time!

Make him a horsey cake using this recipe I found online:

4 cups sweet food or molasses
1 cup honey or molasses
2 carrots, cut into thin sticks
1 apple, cut into slices

Blend honey/molasses and sweet feed until well blended. Spoon into small cake pan and refriderate for a few hours. When cool, invert onto a horse safe plate and decorate the top with carrots and apples. Your horses will love this horse cake!

So make a cake. The children can have a grooming contest as well. Split the children into two groups and have each group do one side of the horse (one group gets the mane, the other gets the tail). Then have you or someone else judge who wins and have little horsey prizes for who wins (or candy or something!).

You can also make a cake for the kids shaped into the shape of a horseshoe! Or visit this website to make a horse-shaped cake! http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder/display?id=50134

You can also buy cheap fly masks and give one to each kid to decorate . . . let them put on eyes, puffy balls, carrot and apple designs, etc. You could also buy a cheap fly sheet and have all the kids decorate it with your gelding's name, etc. and then put it on your gelding to display it. Then take a picture with all the kids around it!
Have the kids make horseshoe frames using old horseshoes and other craft supplies to decorate the horseshoes. Then let them take the horseshoes home and send the pictures later to the kids and they can tape the picture to the back of the horseshoe to make the frame. (Or just print out the pictures then if you have a digital camera and printer and have them make the full frame then).

Good luck and have fun . . . that sounds like a very cute idea!

Hmm...well, that's nice. I can't pass judgment since I'm totally planning on having a party for my dog's 3rd birthday in August.

Maybe it could be a My Little Pony theme? With a carrot cake for him? And kids would love the idea of a party for a horse. Just don't have any noisemakers or balloons that could pop and spook him. It's all fun and games until someone gets stampeded.

Oh, and no Pin the Tail On the Donkey- he might find that offensive, LOL

Awww...that's so sweet! I have birthday parties for my doggies and anniversaries as well.

Bobbing for apples is a great idea. That would be funny if they played it with the horse in his water trough LOL. A big laundry basket works great for that game, the ones without holes of course.

Pin the tail on the donkey might be fun. Not on the actual animal of course. Make sure that there are plenty of party hats too.

Good luck! :)

I had a birthday party for my daughter that had a My Little Pony theme. At the time we had a mini. I don't know if you can find it this time of year, but we got those Halloween hair color sprays. The kids painted him all kinds of colors, put ribbons and flowers in his hair. They we took some great pictures of each kid with the pony creation. At the end of it all the color just washed out, and he was a clean pony!! I could send you pictures of it if you email me at jennifer_krempp@yahoo.com

I also did bobbing for apples like you said, but instead of in water I tied them from my patio cover. The apples swing everywhere and the kids will laugh like crazy.

Musical hoof prints was another game, just like chairs but with pictures of hoof prints placed in a circle. I had to hold them down with little rocks or they would blow away, FYI. I actually had the kids color the hoof prints as they arrived. Afterward I thought I should have used pictures of the My Little Ponies, they would have taken the kids longer to color then hoof prints.

Hope the party is GREAT!

Do you have a party america there or some kind of party store? I bet they have horse related items to help you decorate.

I would do a carrot looking cake for the 'humans' and some carrot 'spray' for the horse.

Don't ya love the pukes on the horse forum that have no clue?? LOL I would ignore them and have a wonderful time.

Hi I think that is so cool that you would throw your horse a b day party! I think you should make a cake made of grain oats carrots and apples or other healthy treats for horses. You could also give little rides on him to the little kids. That would be so much fun!
