Ive just got back from tenerife, when I called home I practically had to get a bank loan to do so! It was half the price to call from somewer twice as far! I could swear tenerife is far nearer than the other side of the atlantic! So why was it more expensive from Europe than it was from America?

The people who owned the phone you used must have made a whooping profit, or the company that runs it.
From the Netherlands I phone NY for 16 c a minute, that is using the land line provider.
If I use a cheap number it can be as little as 1 c a minute in the weekend.

If you use a phone box or a phone house you have to pay more, but depending on how well you shop you might get a card that cost local phone cost and 1 c a minute extra.

If you use your foreign mobile (cell) phone you will pay a lot, whatever contract you have.

I found just the opposite. In US I have to have a special add-on to dial direct overseas from a residential phone. Europe is naturally international. A call to the states from France or Italy is averaging me .09 cents a min. A call from Texas to Germany is averaging me .15 cents a min plus $27/mo. if I don't expend a minimum $50 in long distance charges.

If you have an operator make the connection, Lord help you. That costs $5.30/minute.
