If you're looking for the best handheld on the market, I'd say the Nintendo DS, especially if you're looking into getting nintendo games. If you're looking for another handheld system, the PSP is also available. One thing to keep in mind is the type of games that you want, as the DS has a larger collection of games and a better libary (in my opinion by far) and can appeal to a larger circle of gamers because theres something for everyone. The PSP's libary isn't as large, but if you like the Final Fantasy series, its a must-have as well as shooters, action/adventure etc.

Are you limiting it to nintendo products? If so.... I would suggest the nintendo DS for a handheld and the Nintendo wii for a console. I suggest these only for maybe 10 and over though.
