educating their own children on the subject...

According to this site, abortions in general have decreased significantly BUT the ages at which the average girl getting an abortion is is much lower... in one state it jumps from the average age of 28 in 1988 to age 14 in 1996. Other states jumped from 25 & 26 to 16. What in the world is going on? Are parents of a new opinion "we don't have to tell our girl about protection, we'll just get her an abortion"?

The 'mechanics' of sex and stuff (how to use a condom, risks, etc.) should be taught in school, while the 'moral' and other implications (TO use a condom (see the subtle difference?), etc.) should be taught by parents.

People are getting abortions sooner because parents are not doing a good job of teaching them the latter set. Most of them will just say "just abstain," which we already know doesn't work at all. Trust me, parents, their hormones speak louder than your words--your best course of action is to encourage them to make their activities carry as little risk as possible. Often, the kids you're telling to abstain are ALREADY sexually active by the time you tell them.

Patents are scared and dont want to have to talk to their children. And the in school education is...dare I say...lame. All they teach them is how to have sex and that there are STD's but not how to do it responably or to prevent pregnacy or the contraction of a STD. Maybe they fear their child will be put in a position where they are not comfortable and that questions left unanswered will fall to them.

Really though parents need to get over it and wise up. They need to let their kiddos know they are there for them if they have questions and not rely on other to take care of them or teach them right from wrong.

It's sad when parents are too "embarassed" to teach their children what they NEED to know.

Some feel it's not the schools obligation to do what parents SHOULD do!

Personally, I think the schools and parents should reinforce each others teachings so that we don't have children raising children!

In my own family, I've provided literature and "sit-down" talks with my own daughter to a point where I get "I know...I know dad" responses. At least I know I've done my duty to educate her.
