Kel, I think that's what we do - we get pleasure from it and stay alive at the same time!

Doesn't hunger make you WANT to STAY ALIVE?

Depends on what kind of hunger. But i think all kinds are mostly instinct.

It is a biological response to something we need to survive. So no, it is not an instinct, b/c instinct is a "programed" action to certain stimulus. For example, the male animal that instinctually performs a mating dance when he smells a females pheromones. See...it is a programmed, unlearned ACTION to a stimulus. Hunger (and thrist) is you body's way of telling you that you need to eat, and it is involuntary. Hunger and thirst is the same thing a pain. It is your BODY's biological reaction to a stimulus (ie, lack of food, touching something really hot, ect).
I hope this makes sense.

I would say it's instinct, because if it wasn't then we would forget it and could live without it. But we don't, we can't. It's part of us as humans, as animals. For example, if it were just something that we did, then babies wouldn't cry when they're hungry, they don't know what they doing, they just hungry, they need food to survive. We all need food to survive, and hunger is the way of our body letting us know when we need it.

It's a bit of both. There are times that your body really needs food to survive and you must eat. Then there are times, like for me last night, I was in an awful mood and I ate all kinds of junk that was in the house. Not hungery at all, but just ate as something to do because I was in a mood and did it for stupid reasons, to fill an empty hole within me.

It assuredly started out as Instinct, but as some people became wealthy, it became greed and overeating occurs. I have a grandson who is very selfish and every time he sees food, he claims to be hungry. Naturally, he is overweight, due to his parents lack of will in saying no.
And again, I am sure their are humans who were deprived and gorge when they see food, seeking to compensate.
But, back to your intent, I believe it is a survival instinct, along with sleep, shelter, and procreation.

I think many americans do not wait till they have real feelings of hunger to eat, so both. It is a real instinct when we get to that point but alot of people always start eating before the insticnt kicks in.

Its a matter of survival which leads to instinct...say you were lost in the woods without food for over a week at the point of starvation, thats when your instinct will kick in. Not only will you look for food, you'll hunt it, kill it, and eat it...thats of course if you want to survive.

Hunger is the same as the need to breathe, or the need for water. Its vital to our systems survival. Its not just something that we do, you're born with it.
Some people are wired wrong and always hungry.

Hunger is a physical need just like breathing and sleep. We use up energy just being alive and we need to replenish it.
Now, what we're hungry FOR--that's part instinct, part personal and part cultural.

Hunger isn't something we "do"...and yes, it is an instinct. Eating is pleasurable, hunger, not so much. I agree that it is necessary for our survival.
