Since the drinking age is 21, shouldn't we make the voting age and military enlisting age 21 too???

By the way, FYI, I am 32, a teacher; and a non-drinker. I am asking this out of curiosity, not to get ignorant answers like I "should be concerned more about my studies than partying."

Okay, so if 18 year-olds can't make good decisions about drinking (which, by the way, I have to agree), what makes people think that they are mature enough to vote and enlist in the military? Just a thought...

Minga, that is also a good point...that varies from state-to-state, however.

Yes, it is definitely true that the drinking age is up to the states; however, the Federal government threatened to take away Federal assistance if the states did not raise the drinking ages.

How about we allow the military personnel who are 18 to vote since the president is their commander and chief. We keep the drinking age at 21 and civilians be 21 to vote?

Perhaps those who join the military should be able to drink at 18. they sure have a lot better supervision than the average 18 yr. old...drinking puts others at risk...none of the other options do.

The voting age and military service age are Federal The drinking age is State. Many states tried an 18 year old drinking age, including mine and it was a disaster so they switched it back to 21. Teenage drunk driving went off the scale!

the countless legislatures of the countless states desperate to enact regulations that make it unlawful to drink alcoholic beverages under the age of 21. This replaced into performed under duress of the federal government to standardize ingesting regulations in the process the U. S.. If the states did not enact the regulation, federal monies could be withheld from that state. The criminal age for balloting is eighteen, you are able to enter the militia service at 18 without parental consent (17 with parental consent). you are able to desire to sign in for selective service once you swap 18 years of age in case you're a male (yet not sign in in any respect in case you're a girl). All of those distinctive classes have a reason for the a while that have been enacted into regulation. attempting to examine them is like evaluating apples and oranges--they are actually not an analogous factor.

I've always had a problem with the fact that our men and women in the Military ages 18-20 who go and fight for our country and may die doing it, are not allowed any alcoholic beverages.
Also, if the government thinks you arent intellegent enough to make an informed decision about alcohol consumption... how are you fit to vote?
It should all be 18, or all be 21. One or the other.

It should be completely the opposite... When I enlisted in the National Gaurd I was 17, if I could go to war, vote and legally purchase cigarettes and porn, I should have been able to drink.
I vote 18 as the new drinking age. Though I do oppose most 18 year olds drinking, the legal driving age should be pushed back.

If you are old enough to take a shot of lead then you should be old enough to take a shot of whiskey.
Lower the drinking age or raise the age of entrance to the military. 18-year-olds are drinking, anyway, so what would be the harm in lowering the official age?

no we should not.
we have the drinking age at 21 simply because we don't want it so easy for higgh schoolers to have. Yes I know many of high school students drink, I know I did as well. however if you make the drinking age 18 then it is a lot easier for them to get, a lot more kids will die as a result of drinking and driving. And not to mention more kids showing up to school drunk and that will cause more problems..
As a "future teacher" like your name says, you should care about the childrens' well being correct?
Again I know high students already drink, but do we want to make it that much easier for them?
Secondly. A state has the right to make the drinking age 18 if they like. its not a federal law.

The real problem is that we have a smeared definition by law of what an adult is.
For example:
If you kill some one at 13 you are responsible for your own actions and they can put you to death for your crime but you are not responsible for your own actions enough to decide if you want to have sex, smoke, vote, join the military or drive.
I agree, that we do need to have an official age of adulthood defined, but we also need to consider all of the consequences and ramifications of seting it at any given age.

actually, the drinking age should be 18...but when they tried it, too many 16 years olds were drinking and driving, so they raised it back up to 21, with the full knowledge that 18 year olds would drink.
