2001 Ford Escort ZX2. I replaced the lower ball joints on both sides as well as the tie rods, now i am hearing a strange popping sound when i hit a bump or make a sharp turn. This sound was not there before we replaced the parts. My friend who replaced the parts for me told me to drive it for a few days, if it continues to get back with him. He seems to think it will go away in time when the parts "break in". I dont know about that. Any clue what it could be?

Hello I am a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Factory trained technician. What you are describing sounds like sway bar links & bushings. However there is always a chance the ball joints or tie rod ends were installed improperly. I'm sure your friend would be more than happy to re-inspect your car. Additionally I have been using a new service here in Washington D.C./Maryland/Virginia that allows you to request real time quotes from mechanics to fix your car.

If you friend is unwilling to inspect your escort again perhaps you can find another mechanic.

Best Regards James

This happened to me once...are the lower ball joints pressed or bolted in? If pressed, sometimes the new aren't in as tight as the old and they can move (usually when you hit a bump or make a sharp turn, like in you case). I checked around and found that you can buy slightly oversized balljoints for this reason (for my application anyway, firebird). I suppose you could put a few spot welds on (that you could grind off if you ever needed to remove again) just to hold it in place, too. Make sure everything is greased up well too, they come pre-greased a little but it's not enough. Good luck!

Sounds like your friend is wishfull thinking. He's hoping that it will go away. It could be something didn't get seated correct. It could be the springs aren't seated, or put in wrong. good luck.

Oh-- Take it back to your friend and give him another chance.

If there is a grease fitting, grease them. This is the usual cause of "popping".
Are they seated properly? Check.
Make sure the front end is aligned.

It could be a pitman arm going out. Your shock may be out also.
