I feel like some of these weird shaped fruits & vegetables should have instructions with them (like how to cut it open & whether it can be eaten raw, etc.)

Many grocery stores DO have a booklet somewhere in the produce department that shows what each is and how to cook and/or serve it. Look for it -- or ask someone there.

Besides, you can't do worse than me! I bought a jicama, decided it was a "root vegetable" like a potato -- and baked it, and baked it, and baked it! I got a hot, hard -- LUMP!

It tastes GREAT shredded, raw, in a salad or cole slaw, though! Should have read the book.

I'd be careful if I had food allergies, especially to pit fruits. Other than that, I wouldn't bother with them for the simple reason that if they tasted good they would have become popular (rather than just exotic) generations or millenia ago. I mean the reason bread fruit isn't in your local supermarket probably doesn't have much to do with Fletcher Christian high jacking the Bounty. And this is borne out by personal experience. For example, when I lived in Singapore, I tried durian ice cream and it was terrible! And when I visited the Yukon, I tried a sampler of char, yak, and caribou and it was nothing to write home about. Ditto for buffalo or anything else Ted Turner is peddling. Or anything that died at the zoo and wound up as today's special at the restaurant. Or anything endangered that got smuggled in from the third world and could potentially set off an extermination of local domesticated livestock, as happened in Britain a few years ago.

Nope, I love buying new things I haven't tried before. When it comes to finding out how to cut them and if they can be eaten raw, I would just use the internet to find out. I might even ask on yahoo answers!

theres really no fruit or vegetable I can think of that I haven't tried at least once, but a little common sense goes a long way

No I'm not afraid to try new fruit or veggies, I just wish I could find some. You could try wikipedia-ing or google-ing the food to find out how to consume it.
