I'm worried that driving the car the first 1000 miles at 80 mph in 3rd gear may have damaged the engine. What should I do? Can I demand another car?

I noticed it the first time I drove it...but he didn't. We didn't keep driving it after we realized there was a problem...he is bringing it back to the dealer.

Toyota Yaris 4sp 4cyl. There is no overdrive switch...doesn't show rpm's so I couldn't see how high it revs. As for break-in period I know about that and driving on the interstate is allowed during the break-in period. I'm assuming he went 80 mph...I can probably be certain that he went at least 70-75 mph.

My Honda Odyssey has a switch that will cut out the 4th gear, in case I'm towing something. Make sure that switch didn't get pushed by accident.

And tell your husband to go easy on your cars in the future, sheesh...

You can demand that they repair the problem. It should be fixed under warranty. As for driving at 80 in third gear, that was your fault. Where is the speed limit 80?

Take a look around the interior. There may be a switch that turns off the O/D. If that is pushed, it won't go into the final gear. That may be the problem, you can check with the owner's manual to find the switch. good luck.

I have no idea what we are working on year make model 4 6 8 10 cyls any special features like a overdrive switch on the shift knob Running a little higher RPM did not hurt anything. There are many reasons the gear won't go into overdrive.

Did you leave overdrive off? It isn't a good idea to rev the engine high when the car is still in its break in period. Why do you suspect that he damaged the engine? You can't demand another car for your husbands mistakes. It states the break in period in the owners manual.

Depends on how high an RPM the engine was turning. I doubt it did any damage. Get it in and get the trans checked to see why it wont go into 4rth. If new it should be under warranty. While you can demand another car I doubt any dealer will give you one.

Why the hell would you want to drive like that? Are you auditioning for 2 Fast 2 Furious? The harder you drive, the sooner things wear out and break on any car.

Well that would not really damage the engine a whole lot, though it may have killed your transmission.
