Very few people I know these days seem to get by without the aid of something toxic. There are the dope fiends, the nicotine addicts, the alcoholics, the chocoholics and those who put sugar on everything they encounter to make their life a little sweeter. How did we all get into this sorry state of affairs and what are your thoughts on the subject?

b-a-blonde-34. I'm normally TOBERMORY. The new name is ironic because I've just given up chocolate and alcohol due to IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome.)

katehughes276: Your thoughts mirror my own right now. Life should be good enough not to need these things to console us.

SWEETIE2: Yeah, I might have that chat with you sometime soon. I don't really have a romantic vision of life before WW2 either to tell the truth: women deserve equal rights and there seems to have been so much brushed under the carpet back then. At least now we can all speak freely and what you see is generally what you get. I think that when men were masters of the household, it wasn't good for them either. Everyone was very straight laced and kept their lips buttoned and everyone must have hurt inside from having to put on this front all the time... but that's a whole new conversation!

DW: I'm far from perfect myself. Used to be addicted to visiting hookers, to chocolate, dependant on antidepressants once over. It just doesn't seem like a good idea plus I'm 34 now and my body is giving me warning signs to take better care of it or else it'll pack up on me...

Beauty Spot: Couldn't agree more. I have to discipline myself not to spend all my spare time on here. I like to chat but it gets ridiculous and runs away with time and money.

Elizabeth T: You've clearly had your own struggle. I agree with you about being manipulated. Mostly I get all this annoying mail wanting me to take out a loan - and people do and find themselves in a right financial mess. I hate all that.

Thanks Amri but for me the big one is chocolate. Chocolate has been my comforter from my beginning but I only started drinking age 21 when cleaning police cells in Manchester. It all messes with your mind...

I have successfully conquered misuse of a couple of things. cigarettes being the most difficult and sweets being the easiest. Only when you have tried the intoxication on health are you prepared to strive for it.
In my experience does addictions seem to prevail until we feel at home in out own skin. Most addictions suppress a rich variety of emotions. It seems to be something to do with age, and i don't think it is a bit easy living in a society being bombarded with images of beautiful people living gorgeous lives. a lot of things are done by making us feeling uncomfortable and downright wrong only for the market force to offer us a symptomatic solution. Buy this and feel better... And the substances takes the edge off.
Not wanting to "suffer" any longer sometimes requires a rock bottom where it becomes a question of life and death. I suggest looking on the net for the appropriate fellowship for cleaning up.
all best

Availability and the want to try new things. That is my take on it. I used to do all kinds of stuff that was bad for me. I think falling into it is easy and then getting out is the hard part. Rather than admitting and doing something about it, people would rather think hey, i like doing this. i won' t stop because i don't want to. (i do the same thing sometimes). Mostly i think it is because we want a distraction from our lives and what is going on outside of them.

My fiance always has to drink or do something he shouldnt when he is out with the boys.
I find it very sad that you have to go to these lengths just to have a great time. I was out with my friends last night, half of us weren't drinking (more sensisble considering we had to work today) and we still had a really good time.
Its sad that you cant enjoy life for what it is.

We all need some kind of release from the every day trails of life. I hardly think its a sorry state of affairs but its up to the person to moderate themselves.

the overall decline of society has been so gradual it was virtually undetected...started when women had to go to the workplace during ww1, they got a taste of independence and wanted more...then the economy backed up the need for them to work and thus the "latch key" kids were born...no one was raising lil johnny so the t.v did...now the generation x (mine) has no idea what the hell we are doing and have no coping skills...instant gratification, escape from reality instead of working on it...e-mail me for more insight

You forget one. Y!A is so addictive too. That's what happens when you love something that much. Out of all the addictive stuff about I would say Y!A is the most addictive.
