Polls - choices are given by the asker
Surveys - you generate answers without giving choices
and account them as to their popularity

When you conduct a poll, you have 2 or 3 questions and find how many of these questions people agree with or disagree with. For example, Do you agree with the recent tax raise? 50% yes, 30% no, 20 % undecided;
When you conduct a survey, you have a series of questions such as "what kind of toothpaste do you use?, what TV shows do you like?" and so on. Some of the questions may require a yes or no answer in a survey as in a poll.

to me a poll means counting numbers, like how many yesses and how many nos. A survey asks a question, usually a question where you check off which you agree with or you provide your answer in words. Sometimes they run into each other like the question which asks how do you feel about something which asks that you rate a service from 1-10.
