I currently live in Little Rock, AR; however I'm searching for a job in Atlanta. People have told me to put an Atlanta address on my resume` and cover letter because companies will not even look at you if you are not in the area. Is that true? If so, would you recommend doing that or is it alright to say in my cover letter that I am currently looking to relocate to the Atlanta area?...Any help is appreciated!

If you have someone whose address you can use go ahead and do it. Some cell companies will let you ask for a specific area code and if so go for 770,404 or 678 sometimes you can get a second number in another area code. You can also get voice mail only phone service that will give you a local message number. Where I am just outside Atlanta that would cost under $20 a month.

Sending resumes cold to HR is a very unproductive way to get work. Go the extra step and look up the company's website and find out who heads the department in which you want to work and address your request to them with a cover letter telling them you are relocating to the area. When we owned a business in Atlanta we had no less than 30 and often over 100 applicants for every job and received at least 50 resumes a month even when we were not hiring and we were a small company. Larger businesses receive hundreds and sometimes thousands and HR often does not even open them or if they do they simply file them for when they may have an opening if they keep them at all. People who took the time and trouble to look for the right name and show some knowledge of our business definately got extra credit in our eyes. A phone call or email may help too if you can be brief and polite and ask not just about openings in that co but openings in their field in metro Atlanta. This is one time when talking to a secretary is not a bad idea at all. Some will not talk with you or email back but a few will and that few can give you valuable help.

We had no problem with looking at ppl from outside the immediate area as long as they had the qualifications and were moving to Atlanta because that was where they wanted to be.

Depending on the type work you want you may find it useful to work with a fee paid recruiter (one who is paid by the hiring company). This is especially true with professional and managerial jobs. If you are looking for professional level work join your professional association and check its membership in Atlanta and contact some Atlanta area members and ask their advice about good places to look for work. Look for ads in the professional journals and newsletters too. For other types of jobs consider going to a temp service in Little Rock (employment contractors, temporary in your yellow pages) that has offices in many cities and register with them for temp to perm or simply longer term temp work in Atlanta or wherever you want to be. For entry level jobs especially many companies are using temp agencies to screen and hire new ppl. You do not have a guarantee that the job will become permanent but if you do good work many will. GA is an "employment at will" state which means that you don't have any guarantees anyway apart from a binding employment contract and even those can get iffy.

I'm currently going through the same situation. I'm moving to Nashville from atlanta. I have an impeccable resume and with 13 years experience in my field. I've recieved only one Hit in a 2 month period. I do think it would be more benifical if you use an atlanta address. I couldn't hurt at this point. Besides, You are always notified via phone call for interiews anyway, and most people keep their same cell phone number even after they move. Its what i'm about to do.

Good Luck on your move, its pretty competitve out here!
