F) None of the Above. Unions are not destroyed; weakened and changing, yes.
Politicians in general and Republicans specifically have done a lot of damage.
Big Business lives and breaths the bottom line. In order to increase profits, costs must be reduced. Labor and it's associated costs are often the first to go on the chopping block. Why pay someone enough to have a decent life when you can pay someone in a 3rd world country 35 cents a day?
Nobody's perfect, some unions have made some huge mistakes. The corruption doesn't help. The problem is that the Rank & File suffer for the stupidity and greed of the ones in power.
There are THOUSANDS of blue collar workers who have a decent wage, training, protection from unethical companies, enforcement of OSHA regulations, pensions, and health care because of their Craft Union.

The decline of Unions is a complex phenomenon not limited to the United States.
In large part Unions declined because the industries in which Unions were the strongest declined. At their peak in the United States, unions represented only about 33% of the workforce.
They were heavily represented in manufacturing and heavy industry. However, over time those industries have declined. This is due to a number of factors.
1) Consumer preference. As people get wealtheir they tend to consume less of their income in manufactured goods and more in services. Therefore, as the economy grows manufacturing naturally shrinks as a fraction.
2) Global competition. Manufacturing is highly sensitive to wages, tax rates, and environmental regulation. Thus, some manufacturing has moved out of North America and Europe towards Asia.
3) Automation. To some extent the presence of Unions caused the decline in employment in their industries. Unions increased wages. This made it more profitable to replace workers with robots and other technology.

Unions have not been destroyed.
Politicians have methodically attempted to erode the gains made by Unions and their members but they are by no means destroyed.
Some will argue that Unions have destroyed themselves by engaging in political issues and supporting specific candidates. Their efforts are not unlike lobbyists who "lobby" politicians for the issues important to their clients.
If you have a job in America, thank Unions for all the protections you enjoy, 8 hour day, vacation, sick leave, child labor laws, etc.

D - leaders actually began to think that politicians had their best interests in mind and did not have to serve the rank-and-file as strongly due to the politico pals. A hard lesson which has hurt hard workers, not suit wearers in union offices.

Unions have destroyed themselves. It was inevitable. They serve no function apart from rent seeking in today's economy.
This is why the only place where Unions are still powerful is in Government Departments - more politics than reality.
