I am sorry to tell you this, but despite what others might suggest (resetting your tranny, check oil...etc), you are driving a car with a known transmission defect, and YOU ARE HAVING a transmission failure.

Your transmission (a GM sourced transmission BTW) has what BMW claims as a "Lifetime fill" tranmission fluid. There're no "dipsticks" or refill cap in the engine compartment as others here have suggested. Changing your fluid now is redundant, because you already have a problem in the transmission.

You'll need to do some reading online on how this has been a long-standing problem that BMW denies, but here're a few links.

There are no repairs possible by BMW; because BMW does not supply parts for this transmission, they only offer complete rebuilt trannies. Cost: $6,000 installed.

You have 4 choices now.

1. Quickly trade the car in and buy another new/used car from a dealer (w/o telling them the problem) before you completely lose the revese gear - the least expensive and safest choice.

2. Pay the $6,000 (a costly option considering the market price of this car now).

3. Print out all the articles you find online (like what I did before) and Fedex to BMW USA to request for help (ask them nicely in the letter). If you're lucky, they'll cut the price in half (which they offered me). But it's a long process.

4. Convert the car to Manual Transmission. I know of this place that does it, www.theeurodepot.com.

It is only a matter of time now before you completely lose your reverse gear. To diagnose this, on a "good" day when you CAN get reverse gear, step on the brakes and step on the pedal lightly. You'll see your transmission slipping (revs going up higher and higher w/o any resistance).

Good luck!

well first off if the car is a 2000 then it probably has well over 200000 miles on it.. first off transmission failure is gonna cost you a fortune and be live me for a 9 year old car that's just the beginning, soon your engine will give up, you are now looking at at least 2000 for the transmission (assuming you buy used) and probably at least 5000 for a engine. to add to that tire's and brake pads are going to need to be replaced. Its worth it because its a beautiful car but do you have roughly 10-15000 to spend on all these. This in my opinion is more of a project car. try to haggle the price to like 1500 then if i were you i would buy it.

I fully agree with the others, that you need to go to the dealer asap. Preferably by being towed on a flatbed.

I answered a similar question earlier, and the asker gave the best answer to someone who said I was being too absurd about the cost of BMW service (such as changing headlights costing $50 at the dealer), but please believe the others who said to take it to the dealer. Otherwise, you may be looking at several thousand dollars verses only one tow.

^^^^^^ dead on snowie!!!!

The e46 trannys are no fun...i have a manual e46 and i had to replace my tranny at 70k... and thats on a manual!!!...my sychros went bad...

as snowie said... either trade it in quick or get a refurb one...

i had a refurb tranny with less than 30k miles on it installed with a brand new clutch for 2k....pretty good price ( i was friends with the owners son which kinda helped) but your prob lookin around 2500
visit www.e46fanatics.com and look in the forsale section of bmw parts... alot of people are always converting their autos to manuals and you may be able to pick one up at a killer price... a couple guys have even given them away for free
good luck....

if your tranny is a manual refill hydraulic clutch cup on fire wall beside master brake cylinder, check fluid level for automatic.
