Buy some Birch plywood and some 2x4's build a frame and cover it up with the birch. You can put hinges on the top of it and use it for storage also. The Birch can be stained or painted.

Find a kitchen cabinet ready to finish at Lowe's or Home Depot.
The standard widths would be 30, 33, 36 or 39.
The height of it should be 15" and depth can be approx 12 or 15".
Build a 2x4 frame underneath the cabinet to elevate it off the ground.
Trim around that 2x4 frame with baseboard molding and then paint or finish it.
Top it off with a cushion or a couple of pillows.

Buy an old trunk from somewhere and put a pillow on top. If you can't find this, then use an old bench. If not, build a solid bench from 2x4's(for frame) and plywood(for outside). I suggest cabinet grade plywood. It's smoother and ready to paint. Use wood screws, not nails, and for extra sturdiness use wood glue at seams. Once you have a hollow, bottomless and topless rectangle, paint the outside the color of your choice. (you could also stain it and polyurethane, but that's way more work.) Now, for the top. Take a sheet of plywood that's at least 3/4 in. thick and cut it to fit your "bench", leaving overlap if desired. Cut foam, (thickness of your liking) to fit this board. Glue foam down using "tacky glue" Then choose your fabric. Cut the fabric large enough to over lap. Put the fabric down on the floor, pretty side down, and lay your foam/wood in the center, foam side down. Bring the long side of the fabric up first, securing with a staple gun. Then do the short sides, folding the fabric at corners if necessary. Once all fabric is secured, place the painted frame of the windowseat on top of the window seat (all upside down) and secure the two together with wood screws at an angle from the inside. Make sure not to use screws that are so long they poke out of the other side of the wood. You will not be able to see them b/c of the foam and fabric, but you will feel them!

actually 3/4 inch birch or oak plywood will support itself properly glued and nailed,a long continuous piano hinge will support the lid well, you can get details online by searching bench seats,it's a little tough to do a nice job if you're not experienced, but can be a diy project

Here is a simple plan from the Lowe's Project Center - http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=howTo&p=HomeDecor/ciAPerfectFit.html&rn=RightNavFiles/rightNavHomeDecor
They also have a 'permanent' version, if you'd prefer to go that route.
Have Fun

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
