DirectX 10 is Windows Vista exclusive. However, it is rumored that Microsoft will release a patch to enable DirectX 10 for Windows XP

I believe Direct X 10 is automatically the version of Vista and isn't compatible with previous versions. Same as Adobe Reader Version 8, it can't be used in versions before XP or 2000
