in Egypt if you have the money you can build a mosque without any problems
but if you have the money and want to build a church you will need a license from the Governor of the city himself, and he refuse anyway
and that's what happened lately in upper Egypt when that clashes happened
some Christians decided as long as they can't build a church to do their prayers in a house but that's make the Muslim people of that village angry and they went out to burn the Christians houses and properities
a Muslim told me once in Egypt as an answer about this question that view of the churches and it's crosses offend the feelings of the muslim

The reason is that Egypt is a Moslem country.

Regardless of the current load of crap being spread about Islam being the "Religion of Peace," Islam is totally intolerant of other religions.

As your friend said, Moslems are offended by the symbols of Christianity. At least, Egypt is not an Islamic Republic, where conversion to Christianity, or any othere religion is a capitol offense.

Recently, and Afghan Christian convert was nearly put to death for the crime of abandoning Islam. If US and Allied Occupation Forces had not intervened, this man who had worked with UN Refugee Aid for years would have been legally murdered.

Hey guys,
First of all, I'm a Christian Egyptian...
I know exactly what are you talking about...
For People Who say that we don't need more churches, did you walk by a church on Sunday or Friday morning & saw that people are really standing in the street to hear the prayer simply because the church is too crowded & there's no place inside?!! I did. And they asked for permission to make it bigger & the governer refused, then asked to build another one & they're still pending for 3 or 4 years now & people are still praying in the street!!!
Do you believe that when the prayes starts at 8am, I should be there at 6am to find a place to be inside!!!!
And we find mosques at every corner!!!
Isn't that oppression?!!!
And the Muslim who said that he's offended by Christian symbols!!! Why? People who have other religions offend you?!!! Why do you hate others? why don't you leave others alone? Does praying & worshipping our Lord offend you?!!
A simple question to be asked here...
Why in other countries Muslims are allowed to pray & worship God although minority & in Egypt Christians aren't?
We hear all muslims' prayers 5 times a day & everywhere, on streets & on TV, why don't we complain? because we believe that's it's their right to do so although we don't have to be forced to listen!!!

Guys I'm so angery, so frusterated, so disappointed...
I wanna feel free to go to a church near by...
There're complete villages with no churches & in order to pray, people should travel, on feet ofcourse, most don't have cars, for 10 Km!!!
Is that fair?!!!

And for the guy who said that Muslims are 92% & that makes Christians a minority, where did you get that number from esp that national counting program didn't ask about religion, plus even if that was true, which isn't, being a minority means being of no rights?!!!

We still don't hate Muslims, we just want to be treated equally...
BTW, I'm totally supporting the new law that states that all mosques & churches should have the same regulations regarding building & maintainance...
This is a good step foreward...

Hope I haven't offended anyone...

Well I believe that's a natural thing because Egypt is a muslim Country ( Given the fact that more than 92% of Egypt's Population is Muslim making it nearly muslim completely ) as the majority of Egyptians are muslims on the other hand christians are a minority .
I live in Nasr City, count the decent mosques and the decent churches you'll find that they are nearly the same number.
Plus in all the world this happens look in France for example (the muslim population in France is more that the christian population in Egypt) Muslims are a minority there they don't take their rights there is even not enough mosques in France or any other european country.
In the USA Muslims are a minority also (6%) they don't take their rights at all they are even offended and humiliated.
And if you see in Politics ( Egypt ) you will find that Christians can reach to ambassadors, Ministers, and even Prime ministers ( Anything except President) the only Egyptian Secretary general of the United Nations ( UN ) ( Boutros-Boutros Ghaly) was a Christian .
So sorry I Completey contradict what you are saying.

I think you already knew that you need a license also to build a mosque and mosques also are closed and removed if it's built without license or permmetion. I don't need then to tell you they have just removed a big number of mosques for exactly the same reason.

About the incident you mentioned we all felt sorry for it. This is ignorance of the people who live there (both sides). It is some kind of mess when people try to do whatever they want by their hands. The mistake of the people who tried to burn the houses is bigger than anyone else, but this is the way they deal with problems there. Like revenge problems in the south or land problems...etc.
If we think about places of worshiping as one of the services considerable to population number, it's normal then that we have more mosques than churches. It's normal also {if} the Gov. make it easy for mosques which is I don't see is the case. Muslims can pray anywhere without putting any sign on the walls or the building like in work places or homes. For that reason there are 2 names for places to pray in Arabic {Game3} {masjed} the second can be any place on earth, just to be clean and dry. This is one of the resones that Muslims can say any place is {masjed} and 1 hour later there is nothing in the same place.

My personal message : Egypt is a Muslim country for all Muslims, Christians, Jews or any Egyptian and non Egyptian who likes Egypt. It has been so and it's still and will be the same. Jews lived here, Greeks lived and still living like Egyptians. Muslims and Christians are sharing all of the problems, faced all invasions together and died for their country side by side. Now we all have many problems also together, so let's work together to change it for something better.

yeah i think it's really a dumb thing. Egypt is a theocracy, pretty much meaning the Muslim government has control of everything. in many Muslim dominated places, they are decently fair to the other Christians present. But in Egypt, that's why Christians cannot build places of worship. and prejudices. a lot of Christians are moving to other areas in the middle east and some are forced to pray in silence. this is an upsetting issue because no one here actually even knows that there are Christians in that area of the world so nobody cares to help them. I know a bunch of Iraqi Christians are moving to Syria too.

p.s. to the dude who said Muslims are taking over the world, umm no. they're kind of not.

i'm a Christian but i'm not going to comment on religions in general, we would be open to every religion as Christians and not jusde people because of religion!

ask the jews how they got rid of people in their country and then maybe the copts can start their own coptic state by kicking out all the muslims from their land.

but no seriously (that was in response to the stupid person who said muslims were taking over the world):

to build a mosque you also need a license. Minorities get a bad rap everywhere so you need to check your facts before accusing one people of oppressing the other. Yes, it is more difficult for copts to get a license, but that doesn't mean they can't get it done.
