I have a 2001 Ford Sport Trac and all of a sudden this morning it started screeching like demons from hell. It still handled fine, braked fine, accelerated fine, everything was normal except for this god-awful screeching. It continued on for about 3 miles, then all of a sudden it stopped mid-screech. Is it possible something got wedged in the undercarriage and then worked itself free (please say yes!), or does it sound like something more mechanical?

The sound stops when I come to a complete stop, if that makes a difference.

I'm in agreement with Robert P, it's more than likely to be the serpentine belt or one of the accessories that is driven by the serpentine belt.

Depending on how long you had the car your drive shaft could possibly be worn out, or like you said something could have got wedged in the undercarriage and got free. If your not sure just go to your local mechanic shop and see if they can check your car and find out if theres anything wrong with it.
