4 months after that it was acting like it was overheating, engine rattle and all. It would even konk out at lights without reving the engine. The temp gauge said it wasnt. Well being the backyard mechanic that I am I pulled the t-stat out figuring it would tell me what was wrong by what changed. Its not the t-stat,waterpump or temp gauge. The problem used to be very intermitant but is getting worse. Truck is almost undriveable. Could fuel pump be slowly dying? Thought they either worked or didnt. Truck has 4.3 FI. Please remember im a hack so use small words. Thanks everyone.

Remove your thermostat and drill a couple of 1/8 inch holes opposite of each other into the thermostat outer ring. This will insure that water will flow through it at all times. It will also insure that air pockets -(within the engine) can no longer form. Air pockets in the engine create exactly your problem. Don't worry about overall operation(winter heat and summer cool) after this modification. You will benefit with easier filling and draining of coolant and enjoy truer thermostat operation.
