travelers checks they are in your name and if there stolen cannot be used so youve not lost anything look into it with your bank.. and they can be used everywhere or can be cashed up in any bank around europe
Also a really good tip... carry a fake wallet... stick an old blockbuster card and some other bits in it maybe an old photo and some useless coins and some old notes that are nt used anymore that way if you are mugged you can give them that wallet and not have lost a thing ... win win situation hehe

When I was there, we were told to put it in our passport holder. They were like a necklace and hung from our necks with a big pocket for your passport and anything else you wanted to put in. I would suggest buying one to keep your passport in and money and then keep it under your shirt. It may not be stylish but it protects your money. The pickpockets in Europe are very sneaky and if you were carrying just a purse, I'd be very careful and also have it around your arm and always zipped up. For money, I'd suggest getting some Pounds/Euros from your local bank before you go, and then carry a credit card/debit card with you. American credit/debit cards work in Europe if they have a Mastercard or Visa logo (usually these are the most accepted) and if they have a NYCE logo on the back or a Cirrus logo. Ask your credit card provider/local bank if your card is acceptable. Usually if you are in the the big cities, you'll be able to find an ATM, they're usually all over. But it might be harder to find one in the smaller cities, so I'd advise getting some money to have with you in case this happens. Also, watch out for heavy bank fees. there's usually a fee associated with drawing money out of a foreign ATM and it's usually way more than what it is here to get money out of a nonnetwork ATM. And be careful of the amount you take out too. 50 Euros is wayyyyy more than 50 American Dollars, it's closer to 70 dollars. Same thing with pounds, 50 Pounds is closer to 100 Dollars....
P.S. I have been to Europe recently and people have said that Traveler's Checks are NOT accepted everywhere. I would suggest that you go to AAA ( the car help one) and you can get a card like a debit card that you can put cash on, and works like a traveler's check, but is more safe and more apt to be accepted in more places.

I live in Brussels, I travel a lot in Europe and my Visa works nearly everywhere.
Securitywise, it is the same as in other western countries. Don't show around big stashes of cash in poorer parts of cities. Beware of pickpockets in tourist/crowded areas. Basically, act as you would at home. We are as much civilised as any over here. ;-)
If you feel better with Traveller's Cheques, just know that not every bank or post office wants to change them. In a lot of cities only the really big bank offices accept them. So if you don't want loose time searching for offices, just take your CC.
Visa is accepted everywhere in France, Mastercard and Visa vary in the UK

Get a pouch that can hang from a belt loop, beneath your clothing.
Withdraw money, as you need it, from your checking account via ATMs. You'll get a good exchange rate and not have to carry huge amounts around all the time.
Exercise the same caution you would in any city. Act sensibly, with your own safety top of mind.
Have a great time.

Always carry it invisibly on your person. Try not to take purses, because that makes it easy for pickpockets. Mugging is true, but only in some countries:
Italy
Lower parts of England

Keep the biggest amount in your safe at the hotel with important papers (ie: passport, plane tickets) Keep some in purse and some stashed some place else on your body like your bra or shoe, but don't forget where you put it so you don't lose it. Good luck always be aware of your surroundings and have a blast!!!

Instead of using European currency, there are travelers checks available from American Express, unlike money they can be replaced if lost or stolen.

I used a nylon traveler's wallet with a neck strap so I hung it around my neck and under my shirt.
It looked something like this:

(in fact I think this was the brand I used too...)
