As far Blacks on TV. I noticed that most of the Black people in commercials (especially kids) are light skin and mixed looking. Do you view light skin Blacks as more attractive then their darker counterparts? Please be honest but respectful.

Purplestar that is exactly the commercial I was thinking about. The mother looks and is Black and the child looks biracial. I don't get it, people can't take more then one Black person at a time.

So you think Iman or Gabrielle Union are less attractive then Beyonce or Alicia Keys? Why because the lighter ones look more like you?

Its actually not just 'white' people. There are so many mixed cultured people, it is so common that when you see people on TV ( my opinion) it is because alot of the times the ad or commercial or show is trying to appeal to more people not just one demographic. Like for instance the little girl that looked biracial, she could have been part asian, part latino, part whatever because we all kind of know someone who is part something else you know? I know what you mean about the lightskinned women, actresses, singers getting more of the spotlight and I seen something on 60 minutes or something like that where there was this study that showed that people are more trusting, more open and responsive to women with lighter color hair ( blonde to be exact) This led me to believe that would be the same for skin color also. I don't view light skinned as more attractive but I know for a fact that I have seen darker people treated worse than lighter people in more than just the black culture. You see Dream girls? Dianna Ross? She was the lighter but I don't think the most talented but it didn't matter, what did was how many she appealed to. Some truths just suck.. I liked the question.. Best Wishes

I really couldn't care less about a black person's skin tone, same as I don't care about a white person's or an Asian's skin tone.

I think it's the actors that come in and audition for commercials and TV shows. You REALLY, REALLY CANNOT take something like a commercial, where everyone is an actor and had to audition for their part, seriously. Do you really think the people making the commercial were thinking, "We have to make the girl more appealing to the whites in the country. If she has to be black make sure she has LIGHT skin." That's ridiculous. Contrary to what seems like popular belief in the States, not EVERYTHING is about race and skin color. People are just doing their jobs and making commercials, geared to making our kids fat, not trying to say one skin color is "attractive" while another isn't.

Some White people might feel more comfortable around and seeing lighter skin Black people but certainly not all. In fact I've met a lot of White people that think dark skin Black people like Alek Wek and Iman are beautiful.

I dont believe most white people care about light skin or dark skin.... atleast I dont!! I think it might be a thing within your own race. We have the same thing within our white race really, but in ours its opposite. Im very pale and sunburn easily but I know that most white people think tanned skin is more beautiful which you can tell by all the people that go to the tanning beds year round. I dont believe that, I think we all are beautiful. I do believe media has alot to do with all this kind of stuff though for some reason we all seem to let what we see in a beauty mag, or music video etc tell us what is "beautiful". Hope it makes you feel better that its just not your race that deals with issues like this. I have even heard mexicans say that in there race light skin is better.

No, I am actually more comfortable with and attracted to the way they behave. I would rather be friends and hang out with a darker skinned black who spoke properly and was respectful than a ghetto speaking, ignorant light skinned person. I lived in Memphis Tn my whole life I was around both light and dark skinned blacks everyday and trust me skin color is not that important.

I don't think color makes anyone attractive. You could have the best looking white or colored person and if they don't have a personality they become unattractive very fast! My kids don't usually say "black". My daughter (who is 10) says she is going to date a caramel or hot chocolate man when she grows up. In my house we see people for who they are but not the color of the skin.
As for the commercial, maybe they are trying to put out there that there are mixed relationships that is why the child is not that dark. Just a thought.

I always wondered that too. I really dont think it matters to other races as much as it does to other black people. I'm comfortable and grew up in a neighborhood with many white people. It's like for me as a black person to say I'm more comfortable with brunettes than blondes, or olive skinned whites more than a lighter colored skin. It doesnt matter really.

I don't but I think many whites probably do. Racism, unfortunately, takes a very long time to go away. Remember the civil rights movment was not even 50 years ago. With each generation it gets a little better. I don't remember her name but there is a model who is so dark her skin has that pretty blue sheen in the light, and she kept her hair shaved? She is probably one of the most gorgeous people I have seen regardless of skin color.

I know my daughter doesnt care at all. She cracks me up when she describes her friends. She describes all peoples skin color and what it's closest too. She refuses to say white or black because we aren't white and they aren't black. I've heard coffee colored, wall colored (our apt walls are cream), and various others.

I have been actually told that I was a beautiful to be "one of them." I can't fault people for their ignorance but I can educate. I have been invited places with certain people because I seemed "safer" than my darker sisters. I think that the threat seems to be less when the possibility of being mixed with white is present...=)

I know that I am received differently than my darkers counterparts due to my hazel eyes, light hair and lighter skin. But I envy my sisters their skin is chocolate colored, they don't sunburn, etc....

Quite frankly if I meet someone and really like them and if they really like me, I wouldn't notice it if their skin was day-glo neon orange, but it would be hard to sleep with them:

"Hey baby, It's kinda bright in here"
"That's cause you turn me on, honey"
"Well is there any way to turn you off while we sleep...
Hey why is it so dark in here?...Baby? ...Baby?"

Actually, if someone looks very different from me, its more exciting!

"Ooh a new flavor, yummy"
"Okay dude, enough with the tongue already. I feel like a damn ice cream cone."
"Great idea!! I'll get the whip cream and we'll make a banana split!"
"You want crushed nuts?"

Someday we'll all be one race and the ignorant, closed minded people will have to find something else to fear about each other.

"Son, I don't want you dating that girl"
"Why not dad?"
"C'mon son, you saw that mole on her cheek! She's different from us, what will the neighbors think?
"I don't know dad, did they say anything about the fact that you weigh 350 pounds?"

Maybe the trick is for everyone to support and respect and love each other so we feel good enough about ourselves that we can accept and not fear each other just because we're different. Lets try to look at how many ways we're alike. I was just saying that to my girlfriend the other day, she's a green blooded, 8 eyed, 6 legged, sulphuric acid breathing, lizard person from Neptune. It took us a while to get over the fact that she was raised Mormon, but people still stare.
