I want to take the stick of 256 ddr RAM from my old computer and add it to my new computer that already has a stick of 512 ddr RAM. Both are from the same company. I've heard it's not wise to mix RAM sticks of different speeds. Is this ok to do or not?

It is always best to use ram of the same speed, but it won't harm the system if you mix speeds. The faster stick will slow down to the speed of the slowest stick.

If your machine has the capability of running in duel channel you need to sticks that are virtually the same. I.E. they must come from the same manufacturer, they must be of the same size and type, they must have the same case latency.

Also, there is always the chance that the two sticks that you have are incompatable with each other. This won't hurt you machine either, but it won't POST.

I don't know why you coudn't. As long as they are compatible, you don't have to worry about mixing a 512 and a 256. You can of course, it's not a requirement.

The speed of the computer should not matter. If the stick will fit, install it. It should work.

I run a mixed system, 512 & 1gig. It works fine for me! Your system will let you know if it will work or not... Once you install the Memory check the system to see if the mixed chips add up. If not just remove the smallest one.

You'll end up running it all at the lower speed. ~
