My son's 12 year old baseball team is headed to Cooperstown, NY for a week-long baseball tournament. My 10 year old daughter and I are set up to rent a house with a couple other moms and daughters. Wondering if I should ship daughter to her aunt's instead. How bored will she be? Is there much for her to do in Cooperstown besides baseball?

I have asked her if she wants to go and she wavers - depending on the day and how she's getting along with the other girls.

Does your daughter like baseball? If she doesn't...she might not have a great time...but, the experience would still be nice. If there are other kids her age to play with, maybe another little girl...that'd probably be better for her. I'd say take her...it's a really nice place...and 10 year olds can make their own fun.
Cooperstown is a cute town. The Baseball Hall of Fame is nice...take her!

Leave her at home unless she is an absolute baseball fanatic. First, she will undoubtedly be bored to tears on the drive into Cooperstown. Secondly, she will be compelled to be with you at all her brother's games and that can be tough on any 10 year old. Thirdly, while there are other sights to see, how much "spare" time will you really have to spend with her to make it a special time for her?

I took my son there as a HS graduation present. We had a great time and the Hall was fascinating for the both of us. However, it rained for 3 of the 6 days and during that rain time, we visited the James Fenimore Cooper Museum and other "attractions", but honestly, Cooperstown is not filled with great attractions that can occupy a 10 year old or even an 18 year old.

Make this a "Father and Son" event and pick out a week for you and your daughter to do something she really would prefer to do.

Having been to Cooperstown I can tell you that it's worth a visit. I went for a weekend with a buddy and I must say we enjoyed it tremendously. We are big baseball fans and were blown away with the Hall. That notwithstanding, there isn't anything else to do for miles. The nearest movie is 18 miles away. The nearest mall is about 20 miles away. There are many "collectible" shops, a few restaurants and the only movie theater in town has been shut down. In other words, it's the Hall then boredom. My friend and I really had trouble filling up the time for a weekend. Imagine trying to keep a 10 year old entertained for a week. Anyone regardless of age, gender or team affiliation would be bored for 3 days let alone a week. The countryside is beautiful but I can't imagine 3 moms and their young girls being happy for a week. My advice is to ship her off to Auntie. You'll be glad you did.

The Hall is the big magnet, of course, but there are two other museums in town (Farmers' Museum and the James Fenimore Cooper home) to pass time on a rainy day (or do early research on the coming semester's History report), the town itself is quite charming, and the surrounding area is simply beautiful. Cooperstown will likely be the last outpost in America not to have a Wal-mart; the Clark Trust owns much of the local real estate and WANTS the place to stay small-town. Bring her; even a taste will be refreshing, and if she thinks she's bored, well, she's just not trying.

And, yes, there'll probably be other kids to hang with, and baseball to be played. Life can be good.

-----
ps. Well, either give her a deadline decision date by when she MUST make up her mind, or wield your Mom Authority and dictate that, yes, she's coming. Sometimes that is the best approach; cuts through a lot of nonsense.

Take her with you!! We did this two years ago with my son's baseball team. It was a blast! We managed to get accommodations at a place right on the lake for the whole team and parents/siblings. We shared a cabin with another family (good friends of ours) and had so much fun. Everyone chipped in and bought food and we had a big cookout at night, and then a bonfire by the lake later at night. We stayed 2 nights. My daughter was about 4 and our friends daughter was about 7 and they were fine as long as they had each other to entertain with. They could have cared less about the baseball games. They brought along plenty of things to do--Barbies, games, toys, books, etc.. And we made sure they had time at the lake to swim and took them shopping in town. They even enjoyed most of the baseball museum, but got a little bored with some if it. And DO take a trip to Fly Creek Mill & Orchard. That was a great little find! I think you will have a great time with your daughter and the other moms and girls. And seeing your son play on that field is truly priceless!! Have fun!!

I say either take her and hope she enjoys it or take her somewhere by herself some other time. Remember, there will be other girls for her to play with and even if she doesn't like baseball, it should be a great experience. I'm more of a football guy, but I ws so impressed and amazed when I went to Cooperstown. She'll say its not fair that her brother gets to go and she doesn't. That's just the human instinct in her. If you don't take her this time, then I wouldn't take her brother somewhere when she needed to go somewhere. And we've all heard its not fair, this will try to simplify things.

whatever, you can take your daughter to your son's baseball tournament. Do you think that she loves the baseball? Either before you attend your son's game, you can take your daughter to the MLB hall of fame in Cooperstown where many hall of fames players there as more baseball history.

Don't be shy or nervous that you can take your daughter to your son's game.

Remember, she must going with you because she's 10 years old.

Chipmaker pointing out the two other museums is a great reason to take her. At night try to make it over to Oneonta to eat at Brooks BBQ and catch a game at Damasche Park where the Oneonta Tigers play.
