Ted Williams wore #9 for the Boston Red Sox from 1939-1960. There was one season between 1939-1960 that another player wore the #9 for the Boston Red Sox. What was his name and in what year was it done?

Who wore the number 9 for the Boston Red Sox while Ted was in the service in 1944. It was the great Johnny Peacock who played 4 games for the Bosox in 1944.
Wow, that took a lot of searching! Tough question and hard to find!

Below is something I pasted from allexperts.com and by their info listed below no one wore it during his time frame.

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for writing.

Several Red Sox players have worn #9. The last player to do so was Ted Williams. The #9 was retired in 1984 in his honor.

Best Wishes,

Geoff

You're not thinking about Bobby Doerr, are you? He played for the Red Sox from 1937 to 1951. He wore #9 in his rookie year but then switched to #1. I don't think anyone besides Williams wore #9 after 1939.

The old numbering system in baseball used numbers 1 through 8 for your starting players in the order they hit in the line-up. Numbers 10 through 14, excluding 13 were for the starting pitchers and 15 to 26 were the bench players. The number 9 would have been used by the back-up catcher which was Hayword Sullivan. I will have to do some checking to see if he actually wore that number one year.

Did the player that wore it wear it while William was away at war? that would be before it was retired, and also make the number up for grabs.
