Because most people are right-handed and the stronger hand is used to strum the strings. Same for the violin, lute and other stringed instruments. Originated early on when instruments were not as acoustically developed and could not produce a lot of sound. It might take quite a effort to get a room-filling sound and the right hand was just stronger.
Might originate as far back as the Greek Lyre, which was held in the left hand and strummed by the right.

not everyone is right handed, different strokes for different folks, and to answer the question, it just the way you start playing. its all about what u get used to, a right handed person can play a left handed guitar and vice versa.and to the jimmi hendrix comment---well he played a left handed guitar turned upside down and the strings put on in opposite order. and yes he was awesome and a genius. he inspired me alot along with toni iommi, zakke wylde, randy rhodes, slash, and many more

Because the clasical guitarist of yesteryear played stringed instruments by note and not the complicated riffs of today. They found it easier to control with the right hand and fingers.

I'm left handed and I work in recording studio's and I don't have no problem with it. I think you have a good point.
I tried to play a lefty guitar and it was very clumsy for me.

Everyone doesn't use the left hand to pick. Can use right or left whatever suits you.

I think, not sure Jimmy Hendrix played with his right hand. Then again I was so waisted at Woodstock he could have been playing it with his teeth. HE WAS, WOW MAN!!!
