The American Flag is a symbol of what the American Ideal is. Though we have our woes and are not perfect, the American spirit is. To invert the flag (unless legitimately distressed) degrades the American spirit.
I love my country and my country's flag. It meant a lot to those who raised the flag at Iwo Jima in the midst of battle, and it means a lot to me.

while originally used to symbolize distess the inverted flag has lately more often been used to voice social or political displeasure, or as a sign of protest. I think it's disrespectfull and I would not choose to fly the flag in that manner. The flag still symbolizes greatness, accomplishment, pride and perseverance to me. I would never choose to desecrate it in any way.
