Home Depot and Lowe's both have books on decks and a lot of other subjects, so that's a good place to start. Many of the employees there are quite knowledgeable, so it never hurts to ask them questions.
Any good lumberyard is also an excellent source. They may not carry the assortment of books, but their staff should be able to give you good advice.
Look on the internet. You should find a lot of helpful hints and a variety of pictures to use as reference.
Good luck.

The basic rules:
Dig your post holes at least three feet deep.
Mix the concrete BEFORE you put it in the holes.
The posts should be less than 6 feet apart. I use 4 feet as a guideline, it may be overkill, but I feel better.
Build your frame on a level surface and then move it to attach to the posts. Then add your joists. Level it often.
Use pressure treated lumber for the frame and joists.
Pretreat all your decking with waterproofing. It's hard to get the sides and bottom of the wood.
Predrill your decking and use nice screws.
Measure often.
Make one end even so you only have to cut off the other end.
Get nice chairs and a barbecue. I like charcoal best.
Re-waterproof it in the spring and fall.
Most of all, have fun!

After you pick up book at a store or library, find a friend or neighbor with some experience to get you started.
After deciding location and dimensions, generally you need to put in >8 inch diameter piers<6 feet apart, 6 inches below frost line, followed by posts (4X4s), beams(2X10s) joists (2x6s), decking(1X6) and railings . you may want to attach 1 side to the house.

If you are near any of the major 'big box' building material stores such as Home Depot, Lowe's or similar, they will have plans and information. Home Depot also does in person seminars on such projects, and Lowe's may as well.
