The Versaille Treaty that ended World War One set the stage for World War Two. Germany was made to pay for ALL of the damages done in WW I. With so many people out of work and the German economy in a state of depression -- it took a couple of wheel barrels full of money just to buy a loaf of bread, the German people were looking for someone to lead them out of the depression. That someone was Adolf Hitler. He blamed all of Germany's troubles on the Jews and, ignoring the treaty agreements, he began building a military -- ships, planes, tanks and guns. Suddenly, people were working again. Then he began taking over all of Europe.. Germany found it's national pride. Easy enough?
In Italy, it was the same basic story. The country was in a state of economic depression. No one was working and no one had any money. They looked to a new Fascist leader named Beninito Mussolini. He put people to work buyilding an army as well. He then started looking to take over the northern African countries. Italy joined forces with Germany.
Got that? How are you doing so far?
Next came Japan. The people there practiced the religion of Shinto. In that belief system, they believed themselves to be superior to everyone. They began to expand their borders as well and started to take over all of Asia and the Pacific Ocean.
So, what dragged the U.S. into all of this?
Germany was moving its borders and had taken over all of Europe. The last of those countries yet to fall was England. Hitler was threatening England and so the English asked the U.S. to lend them military hardware. Those guns and airplanes arrived on sihps. The Germans didn't like this so much so they began sinking some of those ships.
The same thing happened in Asia. The Japanese had attacked China and so the U.S. was helping fight them there with a small group of pilots and airplanes (the Flying Tigers). The U.S. also cut off the supply of steel to Japan and this angered them. They attacked the U.S. at a naval base in Hawaii (Pearl Harbor).

WW 2 Started because the Armistice that ended WW1 was very one sided and unfair to Germany. It cut Germany into many small pieces and left the German people filled with revenge.
The 25 years from the end of WW1, while the rest of the world slept, Germany built a tremendous military machine and started to take back some of their land lost in WW1. By the time the world woke up, it was too late and war was on.
It took USA, Great Britain, Russia, to defeat Germany.

All through history wars have been for control of resources. In the second world war, two countries that had a lot of industry, but did not have a lot of their own resources, like oil, invaded other countries to get oil.
Germany invaded North Africa in order to capture Egypt and Palestine. (Palestine is now called Israel) They went to war with England because Egypt and Palestine were colonies of England at that time. Once they captured Palestine they could get to the oil fields of Arabia.
Germany also invaded Poland so that they could continue on to invade Russia. Russia had a lot of oil (It still does)
Germany also invaded France because they did not want France to help England.
The Japanese invaded China and Southeast Asia because of the oil in a country called Burma that they needed.
The Japanese also wanted to invade the Philippines because there was a lot of rubber, and oil there. The Philippines were an American colony at the time, so the Japanese attacked the American Navy at Pearl Harbor Hawaii so that the Americans would not be able to stop that invasion.
EDIT:
America had a policy called isolationism before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Most Americans did not want to be involved in wars in Europe and Asia. The attack on Pearl Harbor changed the mind of America.
Because of the damage to the fleet, we were unable to prevent the invasion of the Philipines. But, we had a lot of industry too, and we had a lot of resourses in our own country. We also were able to get resources from Canada and Mexico by trade.
We started to rebuild our Navy, and we sent and Army to help the English fight the Germans in North Africa. With our help, the English prevented the Germans from capturing Egypt.
Later we invaded Europe and freed the French from the Germans. The Russians were able to stop the Germans at a city called Stalingrad (it is now called Volgograd).
The Germans were defeated. Their leader, Hitler, was killed. Many believe he killed himself.
In order to protect the Philipines and China from an American counter attack, the Japanese occupies hundreds of little islands in the South Pacific. Once the Americans rebuilt the fleet, they had to attack all of those little islands to clear away the naval and air bases the Japanese had put on them. We did that and the Japanese were defeted.
EDIT;
Gabriel, I just read the answer by DOC. It is a very good answer. Even though it is a very different answer from mine, it is basicaly correct. There are many perspectives on history. The story of WWII is very complicated, and DOC gave a lot of detail that talks about specifics I did not mention.
My attempt was to relate it to all other wars past, present and future.

That depends on whose perspective you are taking:
1) Germans: Felt "victimised" by WWI and the Jews/Slovaks/Gypsies/degenerates in their society. Wanted "Lebensraum" (room to live) and felt that the way to ensure the survival of their Empire for a 1000 years was to take over other areas, exterminating anyone who wasn't pure.
2) Italians: Also a Fascist nation, joined with Germany in their goal to colonise.
3) Japan: Emerging power in Asia. Island nation, coveted Dutch/British/American territory in South East Asia, took over many colonies, and called it the Greater East Asian Cooperation Sphere. Conflict with the US was inevitable as they started going farther west.
4) Soviet Union: Heartily disliked fascism, but recognized the advantages of having a "non agression" pact with the Germans, thereby allowing BOTH sides to carve up Poland. Became "irritated" when Hitler decided to also invade Soviet territory in 1941.
5) England: Was in a bit of a quandary. Had influential people in England who were sympathetic to Germany and Hitler and attempted "appeasement" at first with Germany (allowing them to swallow up Czechoslovakia). However, also drew a line in the sand when Germany chose to invade Poland in 1939. Both Germany and France also had a lot to lose becasue of their colonies in Asia, the Middle East and Africa, places Germany hoped to overtake.
6) France: see England (although they were pretty much USELESS once the Germans smashed their Maginot Line)
7) USA: Had a Pro-UK president (Lend Lease policy) and aided the UK with supplies. However, did NOT enter the war (remained a "neutral" power until the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941). On 8 December, declared war on Japan. Japan was allied with Germany, so Germany and Italy declared war on the US.
Hoep that helps

That is a complicated question. But most historians believe the major causes were the German invasion of Poland and the Japanese invasion of China and their attack on America at Pearl Harbor.

Not too complicated at all people: Germany invades Poland, end of story. Later the US entered because Japan bombed our naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
