I've been a lifelong tea drinker. And I'm sure there are benefits to it. However, because I've always been a tea drinker, I can't say I know what my life would have been like without it. I've always been very healthy.
From a scientific standpoint, there have been many studies that say green tea provides antioxidant protection beneficial to the functioning of many of the body's systems. However, the jury is still out on just what compounds in tea actually causes the beneficial effects. an article this week from the Associated Press noted that science now believes some of the effects we had attributed to caffeine, such as the clarity of mind, may actually come from other compound within coffee and tea. The confusion stems from the fact the the many compounds have not been isolated in studies thus far.
Lately I've started using supplements of OPC, more powerful antioxidants than those available in green tea. See the site below for more info. Look under "Antioxidants" and click on the blue "i" (for information) whenever you see it displayed next to a product.

Your initial question did not stipulate green tea but simply stated tea.
Although there is much legal debate regarding the use of the word tea, there are many natural occurring "products" infused in water and commonly referred to as teas, that are widely accepted for their remedial benefits.
Without knowing your specific medical needs try searching the net for , Gumbi Leaf tea, Roibos tea and Essaic tea, as a starting point.

Today, scientific research in both Asia and the west is providing hard evidence for the health benefits long associated with drinking green tea. For example, in 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of an epidemiological study indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent. University of Purdue researchers recently concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. There is also research indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.
To sum up, here are just a few medical conditions in which drinking green tea is reputed to be helpful:
cancer
rheumatoid arthritis
high cholesterol levels
cariovascular disease
infection
impaired immune function
Personnaly, I use green tea to relax and to help my immune system. I haven't gotten sick in god knows how long. So I guess it works! :)

Tea is more of a preventative than a curative. Mormon scriptures state that Tea can be used for some illnesses long before we know the scientific reasons that Tea was healthy.

I have 2 cups a day, seeing I have been told not to drink any more than that, and it is fantastic for bloating. If I eat bread or pasta, or am getting my period, I get incredibly bloated, and, dare I say it, gassy, and green tea helps. Admittedly green tea is revolting on its own, but I buy a kind that has a bit of mandarin in it, its really nice to drink!

Tea is another name for herbal infusion. Their are many types that treat different ailments. An absolute yes.
Green Tea from the grocery store isn't potent enough for real effects. I would buy straight from an herbal shop.
