When you are surfing the internet say on a T1 line your can still only download at the speed of the server that hosts the website you are visiting. If they server is busy or just slow your surfing the site will be slower than normal.
On the other side if your on a faster server but using dial-up it will not matter how quick the host server is. Your dial-up will slow things down.
It goes both ways, but once you get a cable modem your are at the mercy of the sites you visit and the servers that host them.
Hope that helps.

Bandwidth is the speed of the packets being sent out from your computer through your local provider to the destination computer over a certain route. The faster the bandwidth, the quicker the response of the answering system to return your request.
Bandwidth is extremely important with multimedia products and real time processes and streaming. These applications require high amounts of bandwidth or network speeds to get there packets of information back and forth quite quickly.
Take care

Simply put, ISP Bandwidth is like the main water pipe, the more service pipes connected from it, the lower the pressure of the water coming out from the service pipes. so,going back to ISP Bandwidth, if the ISP has a lot of customers connected at one given time, then your browsing speed will be slower. i hope this helps.

what he said ^^^^^^^^^^^
as your bandwidth in essence is your speed the more speed you have the faster it will go BUT and there's always a but if you buy a net connection of say 1mb then that will be your maximum peek so on avrage your net will run at about 700kbs .....
..the more net based stuff you have open the slower your web browsing will be as anything you open which connecft to the net will use up some of your 1mb so if you are downloading say 20things then your net will go slow because you only have 1 mb etc

Well dial up is the pits and FIOS rocks. If the site you are attempting to visit is bogged down, your bandwidth doesn't matter much because the site you are visiting doesn't have any!
