Internet companies have an invaluable role to play in the realization of freedom of expression and information. But in China and elsewhere, Microsoft, Google and Yahoo are instead aiding repression, censorship, and violation of fundamental freedoms.

It's true. The situation in China is deplorable. People have no political freedoms. Citizens are routinely tortured, jailed, and killed for expressing their religious and political views.

But our press and our politicians keep sweeping it under the rug, because we're so dependent on China for cheap labor and cheap products. I would encourage consumers not to turn a blind eye to this. Check where a product is made before you buy it. If it's made in China, and you can either do without it or find an alternative product, do it. It's the only way to put pressure on this regime to change. Sending our jobs there won't do it; that just makes the Communist government think it can get the benefits of capitalism without having to give up its iron-fisted rule.

For anyone who thinks we invaded Iraq to bring down a tyrant and establish freedom ... well, if that were really the case, we'd have invaded China a long time ago.

And shame on these Internet companies for agreeing to China's censorship demands. They're showing that money is more important than liberty or principle. They should refuse to do business with such a country.

We used to fight communists. Now we give them our jobs.

China has the right to censor what its citizens see. If those companies did not produce censors versions for China then China would simply ban the website as a whole and the companies would lose money.

Unfortunantly, it is nearly impossible to have effective age verifications online without completley blocking an entire subject from everyone. That was China's solution to limiting western cultural encroachment. Freedom of expression would prohibit that in America, though.

In the USA, we live in a FREE society with freedom of speech! China does not have free speech and the freedoms we enjoy. Be happy you have the freedom to surf porn or not, and that our goverment is NOT deciding what is proper for us to view.

Also why do you let your child surf porn?

Be happy that you live in the USA. With freedom comes risk and responsibility. We have to accept some bad with the good. That is unless we want the government to decide what is good or bad for us, like the Chinese government has done.

Perhaps you would enjoy living in China, so that THEY could control what is available for people to see??? And, why are YOU allowing your child to surf porn??

You (or we) can't control what China does or doesn't do....but you SHOULD be able to control what goes on in your house.
