I think the lady he's singing to came outta a bad relationship! He probably meant he wouldnt hurt her the way the other guy did!

Listen to the WHOLE song. Towards the end, the female part suggests that one day he'll be out screwing around. He won't do that.

at the end of the song the gal says, 'sooner or later you'll be screwin around' and then he says for the last time, i wont do that! this is what hes referring to throughout the song.

It means that he won't treat her as her previous relationships. He won't cheat on her, be disrespectful, or walk away on her. He truly loves her !! Too bad, real life can be quite different.

he never says so that it is open to interpretation. I loved the Dr. Pepper commericals with that song.

the girl sings: "sooner or later you'll be screwin' around"
then he sings: "no I won't do that"
so, my guess is that he won't cheat
