It's overrated in the sense that it is considered 'the best movie of all time'. its an excellent movie, however it is overrated only because it is rated at number 1

I don't know if I would rank it as best movie ever, but I definitely understand why many people think it is. As far as the people who think it's boring, well I guess it's my opinion, but I disagree. I think it's a fascinating movie. But aside from that, it's an awesome movie to watch. It's hard to grasp, sort of like how it's hard to grasp how shocking the Beatles and Elvis were when they first started, but films just did not look the way Kane did. You didn't have objects way far away to be just as in focus and clear as objects that were two inches from the camera. The film is full of things like that, such as the low ceilings and the specially made sets so that the camera could be at floor level so Kane looks larger than life. What about the way he tells the entire history and collapse of a marriage in less than a minute in just one set? I realize if you think the movie is boring, this doesn't mean much, but I've seen the movie at least a dozen times, and I don't think there's a down moment in it.

Yes and no, yes in the sense that it's a very boring and drawn out movie that's back story and controversy surrounding it (especially the Rose Bud part) really is more interesting than the movie itself.
It's so highly revered due to the style in which it was shot that has directly influenced a lot of film makers.
It's the same with Birth of a Nation. It's a very racist, very confederate-supportive movie, yet it's highly revered as one of the best movie's ever due to how it was shot. Want to go even deeper into good film/horrible plot? Hitler's "Triumph of the Will" is probably the greatest propaganda movies of all time, not because it advocates his wicked views, but because it may be one of the most beautifully disturbing things ever put on celluloid as far as making it goes.

CITIZEN KANE gets so much credit because Orson Welles was totally control of everything...much to the displeasure of Herman Mankiewitz and the RKO Studio.
I don't think there have been many single Hollywood people who've served as principal actor, co-writer, producer, director and pretty supervisor of everybody else connected with the film.
Welles never got that option with the MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS (which was butchered by the studio) and several of his other films.
Of course...my favorite portion of KANE is the magnificent musical score written by Bernard Hermann. It's definitely one to reference if you're a film score buff.

I had to view it for class and didn't find it very entertaining. But later I realized that all the movies I do like have in some way or another been influenced by Citizen Kane.

No. Most action films are way more overrated than Kane.

Depends on how you look at it. The way it was shot was very innovative. (Listen to Roger Ebert's commentary of the movie on the DVD where he explains this scene by scene. It made me appreciate the movie a lot more and why it's considered a great movie.) The best? I dunno...there have been so many other great movies since then.

I just saw it last night for the first time ever. It is a good movie but certainly (In my Opinion) not the best of all time. It was well acted and well directed but definately overated. I thought Dr. Strangelove was Better. As for the best movie of all time...??
