Stamps and their value are shown in catalogues sold to collectors for research and valuation. The values shown in catalogues are not necessarily what you can expect to get for a stamps as these are guidelines and will depend on finding a buyer willing to pay the price. They really indicate the price a stamp retailer would like to sell the stamps for.

To get a real or close to real price see if you can find the same stamp selling on ebay and track the amount it sells for. Stamp dealers who deal in the type of stamp you have will make you an offer for a stamps if it is rare or much sought after. Get to know the value before you sell as there are people who will take advantage of you.

If the stamps appears to be rare you can send it to an expert for a value, and a certification of quality, rarity, etc. and is recommended when dealing with rare items. Most stamps unfortunately have little real value as they can be purchased for pennies.
