My father told me that Israel was re-created in 1948 - rightly or wrongly. Its here to stay!
Palestine was offered a sovreign state at the same time and refused it - they wanted ALL the land for themselves. They said at the time that Israel should be destroyed and have kept to that I think. If Israel vanished tomorrow, another country would be targeted.

Without Israel we would all be in even more danger from Islamic fundamentalism. Israel is the only democracy in that region and as such she is right there in the line of fire. I'm sure she gives intelligence to the West and as such helps protect us ALL from terrorism.
Re Tinkerbell's answer: once again, she's away with the fairies. Israel has supported the idea of a separate Palestinian state; but sadly every time she's proposed anything, the Palestinians have repeatedly stated that they refuse to recognise Israel's fundamental right to exist. Israel asks only for safe borders; if the Palestinians are dedicated to destroying her, it makes negotiating pretty tough.

Jews have been the scapegoats of the Muslim world for centuries. And nothing irked the Muslim world more than the creation of a world-sponsored Jewish state in the wake of WW2; of course, that's what Muslims get for siding with the Nazis. Sadly, the Muslim world learned nothing from this defeat, nor the many defeats suffered through various wars of aggression against Israel in the following decades. The continued violence against Israel simply confirms the Muslim world's desire to continue the campaign of genocide against Jews that their Third Reich cohorts were unable to complete.
Others that believe Israel should disappear or give away Israeli land are typically ignorant to the truth of "Palestine". Once they turn off the propaganda and learn the facts of the 1967 6-days war, the consequences, and the subsequent birth of "Palestine", they will realize that the Palestinians are little more than a barbaric horde of racists and anti-semites, whose chief export to the world is suicide bombings.

It's so untrue to say that Israel's enemies are enemies of the whole west.
Countries like Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and some other Middle East countries trade openly with western countries like UK, France and Germany, Italy, Spain and more, as well as USA and Canada. These Middle East countries are also on our side in the struggle against Islamist extremists, and most do want to co-exist peacefully alongside Israel.
Unfortunately, there are many people in Europe and the United States who look at the Middle East and see nothing but Islamist terrorism and Muslim people with a different set of values and culture to their own.
There are many people in the Middle East who feel threatened by these differences, and some extremists there want to wage war against western countries... as you put it, "either they are dead or we are dead".
Similarly, many people in the west feel threatened by these same differences. There are some extremists in the west who want to wage war against Islamic countries. It's likely they also think, "either they are dead or we are dead".
(edited): Take for example this brain-dead quote from Republican Ann Coulter: "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war."
Until we can tolerate each other's differences, and learn to co-exist peacefully, there will always be extremists on both sides.
(edited): But then, who can expect peace while we have Osama bin Laden and Ann Coulter to solve our world's problems.

Isreal is a non violent or aggresive nation. It simply defends itself. Islamic nations on the other hand are extremely violent. Even if Isreal were to disappear, the Muslims would continue killing each other (Shiites, Kurds, Sunnis) and anyone else that they can. They would not rest until the whole world is ruled under the flag of the dominant or winner's version of Islam. And very few non-violent or "peaceful" Muslims speak out against the violence - this is what is disturbing.

Why do some people think that all the world's problems would be solved if Muslims vanished?
No, world's problem would not be solved if Israel or any other country ,race or religion vanished...but many Middle East problems would be solved if Israel would respect international law and would withdraw to the borders before 1967 and allow the creation of a Palestinian state...
Oh and " Israel's enemies are the enemies of the whole West. They won't stop at Israel - they will not rest until either they are dead or we are dead."...this is the kind of judgment that started that stupid "war on terror"...When will we understand that the people from the Middle East are not our enemies, they are not trying to kill every single one of us...They just want to live in peace without other countries messing into their internal affairs and telling them what is better for them...
allergic_to_morning you are as usual wrong...Allow me to remind you what happened in 1993...Yes,the Palestinians ,through the PLO,have recognised Israel's right to exist in the borders from 1967,giving up more then 70% of the land they were entitled according to the UN partition plan...All for peace and an independent state...Well as we can see they got absolutely nothing in return...So I guess it's pretty difficult for the Palestinians to trust Israel again...

Israel dissapearing wouldn't solve anything.
I have to say I'm astounded that the Israeli army is fighting of attacks from all sides for decades and is still very prosperous and deeply religious. If anyone has the right to religious fundamentalism it's Israel.

Israel exists only as an example of European empirialism. They are doing to the Palestinians exactly the same thing that Europeans did to the native Americans - displace or destroy, preferably both.
Genocide in the name of Yahweh is no better than genocide in the name of Allah or genocide in the name of corporate profits.
And Israel is NOT a democracy any more than apartheid South Africa.

Insane family and cultural traditions. These people need to learn that it's ok if you don't do everything and think everything that your father, grand father, and so on, did before you.
