I understand that each new Prime Minister wants to make the cabinet thier own, but I'm confused. For example, how can an Environment Secretary become a Home Affairs Secretary - do all the members of the cabinet possess all the skills to do all the jobs? If I'm missing something, please let me know.

They only manage, they have to rely that the people who work in the actual departments know what they are doing. It is the top civil servants (the so called Mandarins) who really run this country. MP's are only good for rubber stamping everything and ....... oh yes taking our hard earned money.

To be honest they are just figureheads. They get all the hassle when things go wrong and have to resign, but the senior civil-servants in the background stay the same. I hardly seems worth bothering to change them at all.

There is no real skill involved as it is the civil service that do all the work anyway.The Secretary of State is the executive.

All they do is say what they are told by the civil servants who do all the brain work a 5 y/o could do it!
