I can add a bit more. It is presumably on the same date as the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere June 21-22.
It is the shortest day/longest night. Like both solstices , it is caused by the tilt in the Earth's axis, so that when the Northern Hemisphere is closer to the sun it is summer (Oz's winter) and vice versa for the Southern Hemisphere. The Solstices occur when the Earth is at the midpoint of its journey round the sun. From then on the days get longer/shorter as appropriate. This still doesn't make 2/3 pages, but hope it helps.

It's the longest night and shortest day. To get more out of that, you could try looking at some of the traditional ways it's celebrated. A friend of mine is a witch and she rides her bicycle up to the roundabout near her home, naked, and circles it thirteen times, backwards to the normal traffic-flow!
