Well, a folksong, to my best recollection, is a merry little "diddy" or a ballad. Lots of harmony. Think acoustic.
Google Peter, Paul, & Mary. They fit the description very well. John Denver sort of fell in that category with some of his songs, too. Some told a story. Others were thoughtful, back in the day.

Folk songs are the songs of the folk (the people). They express feeling, tell stories etc. Some are traditional (been around for a very long time) others are contemporary (modern). Steeleye Span put a modern interpretation on traditional songs, otherwise u will find them in folk clubs, often sung unaccompanied(in UK,at least). Any country will have its own traditional music. Back in the Sixties, in the folk bom, people like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Peter Paul and Mary sand contemporary folk - often protest songs about social conditions. Again, u can find modern songs in folk clubs. Not really room to say more, but hope this helps.

Folk songs are commonly seen as songs that express something about a way of life that exists now or in the past or is about to disappear (or in some cases, to be preserved or somehow revived). However, despite the assembly of an enormous body of work over some two centuries, there is still no certain definition of what folk music (or folklore, or the folk) is.

have a nice day!
