I think it is just that, a saying.

People who hit forty start to realize their mortality, and by saying life begins at forty, they feel somewhat better about their age.

Why Does Life Begin At 40

Although some people associate 40 with the beginning of the end...that is, the onset of old age, it can also be seen as a time to have adventures, try new things, and so on. There was an old TV show by this name in which, I think, a long-married couple suddenly has a baby. I never saw the show...just heard about it.

I am going to be 30 this year.. I feel like "life begins at forty" because there is (or at least should be) more clarity in your life.. You're past the insecurities, you know what you want, where you are is okay... Of course, everyone believes they have all the answers and that is why I think there is that mid-life crisis. Since everyone seems to think they are or always have to be "ahead of the game" instead of just slowing down and enjoying life. Hope this made sense (its early!;).. Have a nice day!

It's only my opinion, but I believe that at 40 most people pretty much know what is important in their lives and they are able to prioritize. Some people like "things" so they might accumulate fancy gadgets or cars. Other people prefer comfort so they search for the perfect home to be their castle. Still others realize that people fulfill them so they interact more with family and friends.
So, in my opinion, up until 40 we are on a quest to find our ideal way of dealing with life and after that, we deal as best we can to achieve our preferences.

it doesn't make sense, because life really starts from when the egg is being fatilized by the first sperm cell that gets to it.
