I have a compaq preserio running xp and a dell insperon running vista.I,m trying to link them using d-link router but they dont seem to see each other.I'm trying to share files and also run simulated games simultaneosly

Well Vista and XP have had some issues It will work but you have several things to check.

1. Both computers have to be in the Same WORKGROUP. The easiest way to set that is to run Network Wizard and set the two to the same name.

2. Both will have to have network file and printer sharing enabled. (May or May not be so check to be sure they are.)
Again the Network Wizards are the easiest way to get that done.

3. You may have to "search" for computers on the network.. use the Computer Name or IP to see if you can "see" the other computer if it doesn't automatically show in Network Places. (Many times they just DONT! )

You didn't say which version of Vista.. the cheap one really makes this a chore. MS wants more $$.
