Trojan War, in Greek legend, famous war waged by the Greeks against the city of Troy. The tradition is believed to reflect a real war between the Greeks of the late Mycenaean period and the inhabitants of the Troad, or Troas, in Anatolia, part of present-day Turkey. Modern archaeological excavations have shown that Troy was destroyed by fire sometime between 1230 bc and 1180 bc, and that the war may have resulted from the desire either to plunder the wealthy city or to put an end to Troy's commercial control of the Dardanelles.

The previous posts cover the generally accepted belief about the Trojan War, but there is an alternate theory, even though it is dubious.
Iman Wilkens in 1990 wrote the book "Where Troy Once Stood." His claim was that Troy was actually a town in England on the Gog Magog Downs. He claimed that the war actually fought between Celts from mainland Europe and the Celts in Britain over the valuable tin mines in Britain.
There are several websites that explain his beliefs such as:
http://www.troy-in-england.co.uk/index.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where_Troy_Once_Stood
Basically, though, he claimed that the landmarks and culture discussed in Homer's poem referred to Celtic culture and lands. The shorelines and islands mentioned in the Iliad more closely resemble Atlantic areas. He also claims that the rivers named in the Iliad are nowhere to be found in Turkey, but in the area of England that he claims there are the same number of rivers and there names are almost identical. He also claimed that at the time of the Trojan War, Greek cities were not advanced enough or united enough to fight such a major war.
Most scholars disagree with Wilkens' assertions, but if you're interested it is worth looking at. Just remember that the war was fought so long ago and the writings about it are so suspect that knowing with 100% certainty will be impossible.

Tradition says the Trojan War lasted 1194-1184 BCE. Troy was in what is now Turkey. Heinrich Schliemann found Troy. Several cities were on the site, and two had been besieged. The Greek myths say the hero Heracles (Hercules in Latin)took Troy and made Podarces king. He was called Priam (Redeemed) after that, because his sister Hesione bought his freedom when he was a baby from Heracles with a veil she wore. Priam was an old man when Agamemnon led a huge Greek army that took Troy again. Pyrrhus killed Priam when the city fell.

The Trojan War is the main part of the story in "The Iliad" by Homer. Probably written around 800 b.c.
It's probably based on an actual war that took place in approximately the year 1200 b.c., between the Greeks and the region of Troas, over the control of trade through the straights of Dandanelle.

They invented the wikipedia long back u know! But still
The Trojan War was waged, according to legend, against the city of Troy, located in Asia Minor, by the armies of the Achaeans (Mycenaean Greeks), after Paris of Troy stole Helen from her husband Menelaus, king of Sparta. The war is among the most important events in Greek mythology, and was narrated in many works of Greek literature. The two most famous works are the Iliad and the Odyssey of Homer. Ancient Greeks thought the Trojan War to be an historical event. They believed that it took place in the 13th or 12th century BC, and that Troy was located in the vicinity of the Dardanelles, which is in modern day Turkey. Those who believe that the stories of the Trojan War derive from a specific historical conflict usually date it to the 12th or 11th centuries BC, often preferring the dates given by Eratosthenes, 1194 BC–1184 BC, which roughly corresponds with archaeological evidence of a catastrophic burning of Troy VIIa.
